To Hear the Drummers

Nine o'clock,
there is no one here to hear the drummers,
but he is of no mind to go back out.
Then come some,
in by twos, a man, a woman,
and another couple, in from the night.
Then the stage
quiets down to near-full silence,
as two hands just tune and four more critique.
As more come
and drummers drum, the beat pursues him
(ten minutes until ten) into the night.
