If There Were but One Kind of Love

If there were but one kind of love
we are lovers;
we are friends.
In turns, we would be
parent,
child,
favored neighbor,
distant kin.
You would find me as cuddly as your favorite book
--a book that we would neither buy nor sell,
    for that would be slavery.

Knowing but one kind of love
you would understand my caress of a beautiful dance;
find me jealous of your banana split,
offer equal gifts to beloved sunrise and favorite uncle.
bestow like kiss upon kitten, tulip, and lip.

If there were but one kind of love
I would feel as much nostalgia for this moment
--too beautiful and fresh to forget--
as I feel for a moment long ago,
a moment I scarcely recall
but will never regret.
