When speaking of the past
the Spanish tongue gives too many choices.
If you can conjugate the simple "imperfect"
you might simply use it instead of the "preterite"-
which is much harder and also quite irregular.
This trick works when you say, when.
If the timing of your imperfect act does stay hid
you will likely speak of what you used to do
when you would rather confess to what you just did.
